{I'm home part IV}

::Warning- image heavy post::

On December 23rd Travis, Juri and I went to the ruins of an insane asylum near Battle Creek.
He was told that it was built around the turn of the last century and that it had mysteriously burned down in the 80's.
Also, that a reporter went there to write about it and he disappeared.
He was eventually found.. he hung himself in the highest tower!

We walked on a wooden bridge over a frozen lake and through some woods to our destination.
I googled "insane asylum Battle Creek" and couldn't believe what I found!
No definite record of one.. but it did appear in a tall-tale type thing..

The Legend of the Michigan Melon Heads via Wikipedia:

"The melon heads of Michigan are said to reside near the Felt Mansion in Laketown Township. According to one story, they were originally children with hydrocephalus who lived at the Junction Insane Asylum near Felt Mansion. The story explains that, after enduring physical and emotional abuse, they became feral mutants and were released into the forests surrounding the asylum. The Allegan County Historical Society asserts that the asylum never existed, although it was at one point a hospital;[1] however, the story has been part of the local folklore for several decades. Laketown Township Manager Al Meshkin told the Holland Sentinel that he had heard the tales as a teenager, noting that his friends referred to the beings as "wobbleheads". Some versions of the legend say that the children once lived in the mansion itself, but later retreated to a system of underground caverns. Other versions of this legend say that the children devised a plan to escape and kill the doctor that abused them. It is said that the children had no place to hide the body, so they cut it up in small pieces which they hid around the Mansion. There are still rumors that teenagers who had broken into the mansion saw ghosts of the children. They also claimed to see shadows of the killing of the doctor through the light coming from an open door."

{I'm home part III}

On the 28th Travis and I went out on a fancy date!
He took me to Ouzos in downtown Kalamazoo.
I wore my 1930's Neiman Marcus dress.
He wore the suspenders I got him (plus other clothes too)!

The restaurant was in a 150 year old building.
The only light was produced from candles.
The original pressed tin ceiling was present as well as a hand carved bar from the 1920's.
The food was delicious- we both ordered gyros.
Mine had veggies and his lamb.
We also had a bottle of Red Rock to drink.

{I'm home, part II}

I went shopping yesterday and when I came home I found a broken off key in my lock.. someone tried to break in.
My ex-husband tried calling me while I was out and about.
I didn't answer.. I think he has something to do with it.
My neighbor helped me get back in.
I have to stay home all day waiting for the apartment manager to come and replace the lock.
At least that means more writing/blogging/cleaning/cooking time!

While in Michigan, we spent the night at one of Travis' friend's houses in Kalamazoo.
By the way.. I saw 2 reindeer there!
A gorgeous old house.. I am jealous.
I found some white wine entitled "Liebfraumilch", literally "Mother's milk" and just had to try it.
I'm a red wine person, but it was okay.

{I'm home, part I}

I had the most wonderful Christmas!
I spent the holidays up in Michigan with Travis and his family.
There are so many pictures and stories.. definately to span out a few days!

On December 18th I went with Travis' mom and sister to go antiquing.
We went to Amazing Grace where I found a pair of crocheted gloves and a lacy dressing robe.
Travis' sister and I snuck up to the attic (of-limits) while his mom kept watch!
Up there was an easel where the owner painted, water-damaged wallpaper, some furniture and dresses.
The best part was on the side of the door were signatures and dates..
When we were ready to come down from the attic we got trapped because there were some other customers on the floor!
Eventually they left though.

Then we went to Grannie's Attic.I found a treasure trove of vintage clothing!I purchased a red silk 1940's 2-piece dress and a grey wool 1950's dress made by Jacobson's.(pictures to come soon!)I tried on a white silk 1940's wedding dress and late 1800's dress but they both didn't fit quite right.Nevertheless, still fun to try on!
